TOPIC:
SQL Server 2008 Spatial Data 101 James Lin is involved in a large scale land surveying operation using a high precision GPS network with real time correction and the project has taken advantage of SQL Server 2008's new spatial data support. In this session he will introduce spatial data types, geometry vs. geography, well-known text (WKT), well-known binary (WKB), geography markup language (GML), keyhole markup language (KML), ring orientation, static and instance spatial methods, visualization, spatial index, etc. A quick comparison of spatial data support between SQL Server, MySQL, and PostgreSQL will be provided. Importing common spatial data formats such as ESRI's ShapeFile will also be discussed.
James will demonstrate the use of Google Maps mashup in the front end for displaying and interacting with the spatial data, connecting the Google Maps front end to the SQL Server 2008 back end. The maps will display stored data as well as interactively generate spatial data to be stored.
